Polar Challenge - Detail

Finish line and the North Pole
plane

The main aim of the challenge is to reach the magnetic North Pole. That actual location of that pole varies with the drift in the earth's magnetic field. For this reason the location is defined as the position of the magnetic North Pole in 2006.

At the end of the race you are collected by plane. If the conditions make it possible to carve an airstrip at the pole then it may be the true finish point. More likely is that the actual finish point will be a short distance away at an abandoned mine with a dedicated airstrip.

Weather and temperature

The still air temperature is between 20 and 35 degrees C below zero. Wind chill will bring it down to -65. Inside the tents with the stove on, it can become relatively warm, but the heat will soon disappear. In the morning you may need to put the stove into your sleeping bag just to bring it up to a temperature where it will work.

Hypothermia and frostbite can be avoided event at these temperatures by being careful - ensuring that flesh is covered, watching for signs and doing something (eg movement, eating) as soon as the cold is apparent.

Personal fitness

You do need to be fit to complete this challenge. The training will help, but keeping to a reasonable level of fitness, strength and endurance will make the training more useful and enjoyable.

You will be expected to keep a log of your personal training, remembering that you will be pulling a pulk with your equipment so that strength is an asset, as well as endurance.

Ranulph Feinnes included tractor pulling in his training - A couple of hours of this will give you a feeling for pulling the pulk.

Eat more food before you travel! You'll lose 10% of your weight during the challenge, and it gives more grip on the cross country skis.
